House Rules
Sobriety, Medication & Safety Policy
The possession, use, sale, or distribution of alcohol, illegal drugs, marijuana (unless specifically approved by management and supervising authorities), intoxicating substances, or drug paraphernalia is strictly prohibited. Residents may be subject to random, scheduled, or reasonable-suspicion drug and alcohol testing. Refusal to test or tampering with a test will be treated as a positive result.
All prescription medications must be reported to management, kept in their original labeled containers, and used only as prescribed. Sharing or misusing prescription medications is prohibited. Firearms, ammunition, explosives, and other dangerous weapons are not permitted on Genesis House property. Residents who fail a drug or alcohol test will be required to leave the property within 15 minutes unless otherwise directed by management. Any personal belongings left behind are the resident's responsibility.
House Curfew, Visitors, & Rent:
Residents must adhere to the designated curfew time set by the house management. Curfew times will be specified and adjusted as necessary for individual needs. Residents must be up at 9am unless special work schedules. Curfew times are 10pm Sunday-Thursday and 12am on Fri-Sat. Requests for exceptions to the curfew must be approved in advance and have a valid reason. Visitors must stay in common areas and visiting ends at 10pm everyday. Rent must be paid Friday before 6pm to the house manager or through a specified app or there will be a $25 late fee. Failure to secure employment in 2 weeks is a ground for dismissal. Failure to keep job for 90 days is also grounds for dismissal.
Mandatory Meetings & Program Participation
Active participation in recovery is a condition of residency at Genesis House. Residents are required to attend all mandatory recovery meetings, counseling sessions, classes, case management appointments, and any other program activities as directed by house management or their supervising agency. Residents are expected to arrive on time, actively participate, and provide proof of attendance when requested. Any missed meeting or appointment must be approved in advance or supported by a valid reason. Failure to comply with meeting and program participation requirements may result in disciplinary action, loss of privileges, or discharge from the program.
Respect & Conduct Policy
Residents are expected to maintain a safe, respectful, and recovery-focused environment. All residents must treat fellow residents, staff, neighbors, and guests with respect at all times. Violence, threats, harassment, bullying, discrimination, fighting, abusive language, or other disruptive behavior will not be tolerated and may result in immediate discharge from the program. Residents are responsible for safeguarding their personal belongings, and Genesis House is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged property. Any damage caused to house property is the financial responsibility of the resident responsible. Residents are also expected to respect the privacy, personal property, and personal space of others, and any confidential information shared within the house should remain private. Respect, accountability, and consideration for others are essential to maintaining a successful recovery community.
Housekeeping & Chore Policy
Residents are responsible for keeping Genesis House clean, safe, and well-maintained. Each resident is expected to complete all assigned daily and weekly chores as scheduled and keep their bed, bedroom, and personal living area clean and organized at all times. Residents are also responsible for helping maintain the cleanliness of all common areas, including the kitchen, bathrooms, living room, and outdoor spaces. Any maintenance or safety concerns should be reported to house management promptly. Failure to complete assigned chores or maintain a clean living area may result in disciplinary action or loss of privileges. A clean and organized home promotes respect, accountability, and a successful recovery environment for everyone.
Weekend Passes
Weekend passes are a privilege, not a right. To be eligible, residents must have been in the program for at least 31 consecutive days, be current on all program fees (unless other arrangements have been approved by management), and remain in good standing by complying with all house rules, curfew, drug testing, and meeting requirements. Residents on GPS monitoring, electronic monitoring, parole, or probation must obtain approval from their supervising officer before a weekend pass will be considered. All weekend pass requests must be submitted to management at least 48 hours in advance. Upon returning, residents may be required to submit to a drug and alcohol test. A positive test, refusal to test, failure to return on time, or violation of any pass conditions may result in immediate termination from the program.
Identification Requirements
Residents must obtain or replace a valid government-issued photo ID or driver's license within 7 days of entering the program, if they do not already have one.
Residents are expected to actively work with staff to obtain any required documents needed for employment, benefits, or identification.
Failure to make reasonable progress may result in disciplinary action or loss of program privileges.
Food & Assistance
Ezra House does not provide meals or ongoing food assistance. Residents are responsible for purchasing and preparing their own food and are expected to apply for any available food assistance programs, such as SNAP (Food Stamps), local food pantries, community meal programs, or other resources, within 7 days of admission if eligible. The house's open pantry and canned food cabinet are available for temporary emergency use while residents are waiting for benefits or experiencing short-term hardship and should not be relied upon as a primary food source. Residents are expected to budget responsibly for groceries and other personal necessities.
Kitchen & Food Rules
Residents are expected to clean up immediately after preparing meals and leave the kitchen in the same condition they found it. All personal food items must be clearly labeled with the resident's name and stored properly to prevent spoilage. Residents are responsible for disposing of expired or spoiled food. Taking or consuming another resident's food without permission is considered theft and may result in disciplinary action. Misuse of the open pantry, repeated food theft, or failure to clean up after cooking may result in loss of privileges or termination from the program. These expectations help develop the responsibility, independence, and life skills necessary for long-term recovery and successful community living.
Food Theft Policy
Taking, eating, borrowing, or using another resident's food, drinks, or groceries without permission is considered theft. All food purchased by a resident is that resident's personal property and must be respected. Residents in need of food should speak with staff before taking food that does not belong to them, as staff can assist with access to the house pantry or other community food resources. If a resident accidentally uses another person's food, they are expected to notify the owner immediately and replace the item as soon as possible. Food theft or theft of any personal property may result in disciplinary action, including restitution, loss of privileges, or immediate discharge from the program for repeated or serious violations.
House Visitor Policy
Friends and family are welcome to visit while respecting the safety, privacy, and recovery of all residents. All visitors must remain in the common areas, including the living room, kitchen, and patio. Visitors are not permitted in private rooms under any circumstances. Visiting hours are from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and all visitors must leave the property by 10:00 PM. Residents are responsible for the conduct of their guests at all times. Visitors who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, disruptive, or violate house rules will be asked to leave immediately. Genesis House reserves the right to deny or end any visit that interferes with the safety, security, or recovery environment of the program. No exceptions.
Noise & Music Policy
Residents are required to use headphones or earbuds at all times when listening to music, watching videos, playing games, or using any device that produces sound. Playing audio through phone speakers, Bluetooth speakers, televisions, or other devices that can be heard by others is not permitted unless approved by management for a house event. Residents must avoid yelling, using loud or abusive language, slamming doors, or creating unnecessary disturbances. Phone conversations should be kept at a respectful volume and must not disrupt other residents. Residents are expected to comply immediately with any staff request to reduce noise. Repeated violations of this policy may result in disciplinary action, including loss of privileges or discharge from the program.
Termination Policy
Residents may be subject to immediate termination for, but not limited to, positive drug or alcohol tests, refusal to test, possession or use of alcohol, illegal drugs, or prohibited substances, possession of firearms or other prohibited weapons, violence, threats, theft, destruction of property, repeated violations of house rules, or being AWOL from the program. Residents who are discharged must leave the property immediately or within the timeframe directed by management. Ezra House reserves the right to notify parole, probation, the VA, referral agencies, or other supervising authorities of a resident's discharge when appropriate.
Personal Property Policy
Residents who violate program rules may be subject to disciplinary action, including verbal warnings, written warnings, loss of privileges, or immediate discharge from Ezra House. Any personal belongings left behind are the resident's responsibility. Unless other arrangements have been approved by management, residents have 24 hours to retrieve all personal property. After 24 hours, any remaining items may be donated, discarded, or otherwise disposed of at the discretion of Ezra House.
Transportation Policy
Ezra House encourages residents to become independent and take responsibility for their own transportation needs. Routine transportation is not provided, and residents are responsible for arranging transportation to work, treatment, appointments, meetings, shopping, and other personal activities. As a courtesy, Ezra House may provide a bus pass or transportation to a resident's first parole or probation appointment when approved by management. Residents are expected to utilize available transportation options, including city bus service, Uber or Lyft, taxis, bicycles, electric scooters, personal vehicles, or walking when appropriate. Workforce Solutions, the VA, Medicaid transportation, churches, and other community organizations may offer transportation assistance, and residents are responsible for applying for and using these resources when eligible. Residents should not expect staff or other residents to provide transportation.
